According to Vanguard, the new company, Playback Nigeria which is the Theatre arm of Media Advocacy and Development Initiative; “is expected to create art-based interventions for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and other people exposed to psychological trauma which could lead to emotional shock, mental imbalance, health and existence as human being; and to coordinate activities of the first Playback Theatre Company in Nigeria”, the statement further stated. The company reputed to be the first of its kind in Nigeria and second in Africa after the “Drama for Life” Playback theatre company in South Africa is among the over 100 Playback Theatre companies around the world practiced in over 55 nations registered under the International Playback Theatre Network.
Playback Theatre is an original form of improvisational theatre in which audience members tell stories from their lives and watch them enacted on the spot. Playback Theatre is interactive and spontaneous, and it bases its material on the stories of the community. In theatres, workshops, and a wide range of educational and organizational settings, Playback Theatre draws people together and allows fresh perspectives.
In a Playback theatre, performances are carried out by a team of actors, the conductor, and musician. As the show begins, audience members respond to questions from the conductor, then watch as actors and musician create brief theatre pieces on the spot. Later, volunteers from the audience come to the stage to tell longer stories, choosing actors to play the main roles. Although performances often focus on a theme of interest or concern, the performers follow no narrative agenda, but bring their dramatic skills and their humanity to embodying on the stage the concerns and experiences of audience members.
The new company is currently recruiting and training its first sets of members in Nigeria for free. Interested young people with passion for using Art-Based processes for social change are invited to apply via email, office@playbacknigeria.com.
